Francis has just retired from teaching his Lifedrawing and painting class in Richmond College after 44 years.
Francis is a wonderful lifedrawing and painting teacher, very kind, patient, and very inspiring. Definitely, why I and many others are still painting as much today. I attended Francis’s classes for many, many happy years, I think 30, and met some wonderful people there, some of which I am still in touch with including Francis of course.
We had a party yesterday, 7 September to celebrate Francis and to say thank you to him for all he has done for all his students over the years. Also thank you very much Lyn for hosting yesterday’s event. We all had a great day, talking and laughing about the great times we all had in his class. Thank you very much Francis.
Portrait of my son Julian. I am so proud of him. He is kind, thoughtful, and intelligent. Studying for his Masters in Robotics, and working very hard. I love our chats and chess games, although the student has now become the master. Not only is he my son but he he is my best friend.
Patrick from Raw Umber Studios. A brilliant model to paint, great character and attitude.

I have known John since we were 11 and he is my brother from another wonderful mother, just a brilliant laugh always has everyone in stitches, and would help anyone if he possibly could. I can’t believe how long we have known each other, and it is an honour to call him my friend.
My friend Martin, a great artist. I have wanted to paint his portrait for some time now. Happy I managed to get the opportunity, I would like to do another. Oil on canvas 16x20”.
Steve Postgate from Herne Bay Lifedrawing class. Steve is a fellow artist and sculptor.
This is a portrait commission of our great friend Ross, this was his birthday present from his lovely wife Martina who commissioned his portrait. My portrait of Ross captures his happy positive nature.
First portrait painting after the portrait I did of my friend Mike.
16x20” Oil on canvas.
Commissioned Portrait of Joe in Baseball cap16x20” Oil on canvas. SOLD
Mike commissioned me to paint his portrait for his family, whilst he had terminal cancer. It was an honour and a privilege to paint his portrait. Mike had eight sittings to complete his portrait. We had some wonderful chats about his life and his lovely family. Mike was writing his memoirs which unfortunately he did not complete. He had a brilliant sense of humour even though things were so tough for him, and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. RIP
Robert from RawUmber Studios. Robert really reminded me of Leonardo Da Vinci. Great character to paint. This is the third portrait in a row I have painted where the subject had a beard. They are always very difficult to paint. The last painting I tried to make the subject's beard very realistic, but I thought this time I would try to summarise it, and I think this is better. Oil on canvas 16x20"
Portrait of my son Julian at 21 who has just finished University, and graduated with a first in Robotics from Middlesex. I am very proud of him, he worked so hard for the last three years. I think I have caught something of his determination and drive. I love him very much. Oil on canvas 16x20"
Chloe my lovely daughter.
She means so much to me, I love her so much. I hope how I feel about her shows in this portrait. I think I spent more time pondering rather than actually painting, but it had to be right.
I loved the way the light was shining across his face, which really added to his character. His beard was very tricky, and I could have spent a lot longer, but thought it probably would not add anymore to his portrait.
Portrait of Naomi Lyons, commissioned by her husband Frank. I really enjoyed painting her, and wanted to capture Naomi’s wonderful character, she is a very warm, interesting, bright, fun person, with a real love for life. I spent much longer than I normally do on this portrait because it really mattered to me, and I wanted it to really say something that I see, about Naomi. She is a great artist herself, @the_naomi_lyons I love the fact we attend a portrait drawing class together. Oil on canvas 16x20".

Portrait of Robert , from Raw Umber Studios. Unfortunately not getting much time to paint at the moment so progress is slow. Oil on canvas 16x20"
Portrait of my lovely Alli, my fiance, and the love of my life. Thank you Xxx
Steve with his hat. I really liked the faraway gaze, in contemplation, and his blue hat. Could have done more on this portrait but I decided it was time to stop.
Robert from RawUmber Studios portrait two. Again Robert really reminded me of Leonardo Da Vinci, so I had to paint another version, from a different angle. I prefer this version where Robert is looking straight at you. I think why Leonardo resonates so strongly for me, is the first art book I was bought by my Mum was about Leonardo's drawings, and Robert really reminded me of one of the drawings in that book. This is the fifth portrait I have painted where the subject had a beard. It's becoming a theme. Oil on canvas 16x20”.
Encee from Raw Umber WIP. Had a great day painting and teaching my friend Ali.
I have painted Kit several times over the years and he is excellent model, very interesting to paint.
Charlie in a very cool hat, at Drink and Draw at the Lamb in Surbiton. I just loved the composition, the angle of the pose and especially the hat. Charlie is a great model to paint. I think I will do a series as he kindly did a few different poses for me. Thanks Charlie.
Oti Mabuse from Strictly Come Dancing who sat for Sky Portrait Artist of the Week, 14-03-2021. With the brilliant Curtis Holder winner of Portrait Artist of the Year 2020, was the guest artist. Love his work.
This is my portrait of Oti which I was happy with, as I felt I captured her positive and lovely personality. Really enjoyed portrait artist of the week. It really helped me during the pandemic, being art of a wider art community was great. Thank you.
oil on canvas by Jonathan Ing
Adam Bowden-Smith from the Lamb. Adam posed for us for drink and draw. It was a great session as usual. I am going to leave it at this stage, as I think I have really captured Adam. Oil on canvas 16x20".
Martin from RawUmber Studios. This is the second time I have painted Martin, a great character to paint, and the fourth portrait I have painted where the subject had a beard. I like the background white and I decided to leave it like that.
My Portrait of Dame Mary Beard on Sky Portrait Artist of the Week competition painted June 21, 2020, Oil on canvas 16”x20”. Mary sat for Sky Portrait Artist of the Week. A brilliant series from @SkyArts that I have absolutely loved being part of every week. Not sure what I will do after it finishes next week. Great listening to Mary, very interesting.
This is a portrait of Dave Grimwood a great friend of mine, an excellent artist himself, and a very creative and inspiring designer.
Hugh has so much character. Loved his expression and painting him.
Sam from Raw Umber Studios. I loved the lighting on Sam, lots of contrast. I think it gives the painting very interesting shadows. I could carry on with this, but I think I will leave it for a few weeks and see what I think then.
Portrait of Virginie from Rawumberstudios. I loved the tilt of her head in this pose, and the positive attitude, and strength.
Jon on his veranda, deep in thought. Just loved the intensity of his expression, but still there was a hint of a smile. A very intelligent, and interesting friend of mine.
Vic our elder statesman, I am pleased I pushed on with this portrait, as Vic’s character is really showing through. It is hard to believe he is 95% blind, always very courageous and 85 years old, unbelievable, never complains and very funny too.
Juliet is a brilliant model to paint. She has her own traditional Grenadian street food business, which I can’t wait to try. I really enjoyed painting her portrait. Had a battle with the background. Seemed to go really slowly. Oil on canvas 16x20”
Portrait of my son Julian 20 in 2021. I painted Julian last year, but I am much happier with this portrait. Julian was deep in thought when he posed for me, about his online sustainable clothing business @hiraeth.uk. He works very hard and is very kind and thoughtful. I love him dearly and I am very proud of him.
Charlie without the hat, at Drink and Draw at the Lamb in Surbiton. Again I loved the composition, the strength of the orange on Charlie’s head and face.
I am really thrilled that my Portrait of Professor Green came third in the Sky Portrait Artist of the Week competition. AKA Stephen Mandelson painted June 17, 2020, Oil on canvas 16”x20”. The Professor sat for Sky Portrait Artist of the Week. A brilliant series from @SkyArts that I have absolutely loved being part of every week. Not sure what I will do after it finishes next week. Great listening to the Professor, especially about all his brilliant documentary films and of course his music.
Jon Snow from Channel 4 painted 29/11/2020 when he sat for Sky Portrait Artist of the Week. With Catherine MacDermid painting him. I love this show, always interesting guests, listening to what they have to say each week. Relaxing into it, the time goes so quick when I paint them as well. Oil on canvas 16x20”.
“Tangle” Simon from the Lamb in Surbiton. Really liked the contrast between all the greens and his face.
Oil on canvas 16x20"
Solly from Raw Umber Studios, I decided to push on with this portrait, and I do think it has improved as a result, it has more life than it did. Solly is a great model and I loved the attitude of her pose.
Self-portrait in my studio April 2021.
This self-portrait was painted in April 2021, I am feeling more optimistic than I was about life and the future, and I think this is reflected in my painting. I did actually get neck ache painting this as it was from life, using a mirror in my studio. I really liked the angle and thought it made for an interesting dynamic and made the painting unusual. Part of the reason is I have had my first Covid jab and am looking forward to getting the second and I am very grateful for this. I had painted another self-portrait when I was feeling worried in January of this year but I now can’t look at that one and I do think this new self-portrait is a much truer reflection of me.
John is a great model to paint and looked almost biblical, with lots of character. Really enjoyed capturing his character.
This is the second portrait of Dave Grimwood I have done, I think this portrait captures the character of Dave I know, better than the previous portrait I painted of him where he was posing and looking tough. Dave is an excellent artist himself, and a very creative designer.
I just loved the depth and the highlight on Roberts forehead. Lots of character, brilliant to paint.
I have done a watercolour portrait of Paul as well. Just thought he was such an interesting subject had to have a go in oils.
Arnie from Raw Umber Studios. Week 54 Arnie has a great presence and feeling of inner strength which I attempted to capture. Wanted to see how far I could push this painting and still try to keep the paint lively. I just really enjoyed painting his portrait.
I painted a portrait of my mum last year without her glasses, she asked me to do one with her glasses and I just had to include her pug scarf, as she is pug mad.
Great Irish Actress Nicola Coughlan @nicolacoughlan for Sky portrait artist of the week. Starred in Derry Girls playing Claire Devlin which was ace, and Penelope Featherington in Bridgerton. Nicola was so positive and lovely it was great to listen to her and paint her.
I just loved the red reflected light on his face. This was a quick painting, but I was really free and loved the strong colours and contrast.
Really liked the thoughtful pose and the strong colours on his face and understated light on his hand.
BBC News presenter Clive Myrie for Sky Portrait Artist of the Week. 28 February 2021. My painting of Clive is in oils 16"x20" on canvas.
Toby from Rawumber Studios. I loved the angle of his head, looking up like this makes for a really dynamic composition which is unusual and difficult, due to the dramatic foreshortening. Found this painting a challenge but a good one. Feel like I pushed this painting. Oil on canvas 16x20”.
This was my New Year 2021 project to do a self-portrait, I started it in December did a quick session then left it until the end of December and finished it just after New Year. Oil on canvas 16x20”.
This is martin a brilliant model from Raw Umber Studios, I painted this 10-11/7/20. Great character to paint.
From Sky Portrait Artist of the Week painting Danni Minogue @danniiminogue. I really enjoyed the series. Thank you Sky for a great Series. Such a shame that this was the last one in the series. Love the show. Please come back soon. The chat was great with Danni as well. My painting is in oils 16"x20" canvas
Lesley Garrett, CBE the fantastic soprano singer, musician, broadcaster. As painted when Lesley sat for Sky portrait artist of the week. Down to earth and entertaining. Painting along with the brilliant Tom Croft. 16"x20" Oil on canvas.
Baroness Floella Benjamin: Joan Bakewell hosts a live paint-along as the author and politician 15/11/2020. Oil on canvas 16x20”.
This portrait was painted whilst watching Sky Portrait Artist of the Week. On Sunday 8 November 2020. Samira was very interesting to listen to whilst painting her.
TJ from Raw Umber Studios. TJ from Raw Umber Studios. Week 16.Thank you Raw Umber Studios for providing a great model, really enjoyed painting him.
Melanie Blatt: The All Saints singer sits down for a portrait as Joan Bakewell hosts the interactive paint-along, MY Portrait Artist of the Week (1/11/20) (S2, ep 3). The show was really interesting. I was really honoured as my painting of Melanie was dispalyed on the show with Samira Ahmed on 8/11/2020 the week after. Thank you Sky.
Nihal Arthanayake: The TV and radio presenter sits down for a portrait for Sky #myPAOTW. Another great show.
Robin from Raw Umber Studios. Painted October 2020
WIP of a portrait I am painting of my brilliant stepfather Vic. He is an inspiration to me, 83 and he is blind but you would never know. Never tells anyone. Won't use his white stick. Always smart. Still tries to do DIY which is unbelievable but true, never ever beaten. Very proud to know him and to have him in my life.
Portrait of my son, Julian at 19. I could not have a better son. He is a very clever and a deep thinker, always interesting to talk to. I have tried to capture him with a thoughtful look. He is very entrepreneurial and I am very proud of him and love him dearly.
My lovely daughter Chloe, I found painting her very difficult, didn't want to mess it up. Chloe loves her portrait which means everything to me. It does say something I wanted to say. I love her so much. Soppy but true.
Study of depressed man. I developed an earlier colour sketch, trying to keep it lively and loose, and retain his emotion. Found the background a challenge, had to change it as it was too strong.
Manko from Raw Umber Studios. Week 14.
I thought Manko looked really elegant in this pose. Also tried something a little different in the background. Thank you Raw Umber Studios for putting this class on.
My portrait of Will Young, a great subject for Sky My Portrait Artist of the Week. Very interesting listening about Will's acting and writing career. The light was great and I really liked the composition.
My portrait of the lovely Claire Balding, another great subject to paint for Sky My Portrait Artist of the Week. I thought Claire had a great face to paint and I really enjoyed listening to her whilst painting. 16”x20” oil on canvas.
My portrait of the brilliant Noel Fielding, great subject to paint for Sky My Portrait Artist of the Week. Noel is an artist himself and it was great to learn about his creative process and the painters he admires, such as Bacon who is a favourite of mine and also Basquiat who has had such a massive influence on youth culture and the fight against racism. I really wanted the viewer just to focus on Noel in my painting and I like the fact that I only indicated the one broken heart from his jacket and omitted most of the background from the composition. 16”x20” oil on canvas.
This is my portrait of Judge Rinder who sat for Sky My Portrait Artist of the Week 17/5/2020. He was a very interesting and entertaining sitter and it was great to paint him, really enjoyed the session.

My portrait of John Rankin, Photographer who sat for Sky Portrait Artist of the Week on 10/5/2020.

Hugh is a fantastic model who I have drawn and painted many times over the years, but I do believe that this is the best portrait I have ever painted of him. This was completed in Francis Bowyer’s class in Richmond upon Thames. Oil on canvas 16" x 20".
